Walden degree programs include management, public administration, education, health and human services, psychology, engineering, and IT. Our academic standards are high, our faculty is experienced, and our curriculum is rigorous. The Walden distance-learning approach optimizes relevance and depth of learning by letting students share experiences with peers here and abroad.
Since 1970, Walden has stayed true to its mission: serving the higher education needs of professionals who work for positive social change. Our programs help students achieve their personal enrichment and career advancement goals. Our graduates, in turn, enrich and advance the lives of countless others they serve.
At Walden University, you’ll find a community of students, faculty, and staff who are dedicated to lifelong learning in the pursuit of professional excellence and positive social change.
Distance Learning
Walden was founded in 1970 on the belief that learning does not occur at special times and in special places. That learning is a way of life to which all adults, particularly busy professionals, should have broad access. Walden’s distance-learning format allows you to achieve your goals while maintaining your personal and professional commitments. And it puts you in touch with a global network of peers from a diverse range of professional backgrounds. Through the open exchange of ideas, you’ll gain new perspectives on the challenges you face in your community.
Although you’ll have the flexibility to study when and where you want, you will need to dedicate significant time to your program. Students report that in each course they spend 15 to 20 hours a week reading, working on assignments, contributing to discussions, and conducting research.
Student-Centered
From the time you first inquire about Walden, through your orientation, program, and graduation, Walden’s faculty and staff are dedicated to ensuring your success.
- Enrollment advisors will guide you through the decision-making and application process.
- Financial counselors will offer options for funding your education.
- Online concierges will guide you through the online learning environment.
- Academic advisors will monitor your progress.
- Faculty mentors will ensure that the coursework is relevant to your personal and professional interests.
- Librarians will help you identify, evaluate, and obtain resources.
- Writing center staff will assist you with academic research and writing.
- And your fellow students will be available to collaborate on group assignments and offer their encouragement.
Walden University Vision
Walden University envisions a distinctively different 21st-century learning community where knowledge is judged worthy to the degree that it can be applied by its graduates to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good.
Walden University Mission
Walden University provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they may transform society.
Ph.D. in Education
The Ph.D. in Education program produces leaders who can address the nation’s most pressing educational challenges. Each of the specializations is designed to match your professional interests and meet the needs of your organization. In fact, it requires educators to come to the program with defined learning goals, and challenges them to design their own program of study.
The General Program in Education is intended for students whose professional practice and career goals cover a range of educational topics or are interdisciplinary, combining specific education subjects with complementary subjects from the humanities, natural or social and behavioral sciences.
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
Walden’s Ed.D. program has two specializations—Teacher Leadership and Administrator Leadership for Teaching and Learning. Both are semester-based programs designed for educators who want to continue their practice while assuming leadership roles in their schools and communities.
Administrator Leadership for Teaching and Learning Specialization
The Administrator Leadership for Teaching and Learning specialization is designed for administrators and teachers who want to increase their ability to influence and transform their educational organization. The curriculum has been developed to focus on building a collaborative organization—a new and innovative model in administrator leadership. Graduates from this Ed.D. program will be able to integrate theory and practice to impact both their career and the lives of their students.
Teacher Leadership Specialization
The Teacher Leadership specialization is designed for educators who want to continue teaching while assuming leadership roles in their school and community. It focuses on the "educator as leader" and empowers experienced master educators to effect change and improve student learning. The program is based on standards developed by the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium and the National Staff Development Council.
M.S. in Education
The M.S. in Education program is designed to develop educators serving students in K–12 classrooms as scholar-practitioners. The program teaches advanced skills that are designed to improve student learning. Each specialization area encourages educators to put their new skills to the test in actual classroom and school settings and to continually challenge the results of teaching and learning.
The M.S. in Education has a semester-based curriculum and, therefore, has a different academic calendar and procedures than the university’s quarter-based curricula.
Ph.D. in Health Services
The Ph.D. in Health Services program prepares you to serve at the forefront of the design and delivery of cutting-edge health services in the private and public sectors. In the program, you will examine both the theoretical foundations of knowledge and the practical application of theory to the delivery of health care services. This dual approach will help you become a scholar-practitioner who can meet the challenges of contemporary health care systems and the communities served by these systems.
Ph.D. in Human Services
The Ph.D. in Human Services will prepare you to serve at the forefront of the design and delivery of cutting-edge public services and to excel within a diverse service-delivery system. It will also equip you with action-oriented research skills and context-sensitive knowledge for application within unique practice environments.
The General Program in Human Services offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human services.
Ph.D. in Public Health
The Ph.D. in Public Health program focuses on seeking solutions to significant public health problems and applying and integrating new knowledge into public health research and practice settings. The curriculum is focused on community health, including medical, social, political, ethical, and economic factors that contribute to an overall well-being of a public health system and to the community it serves. The program emphasizes the development and demonstration of strong research skills—skills that will help students pursue professional careers in academia or service to public and private governmental and nongovernmental organizations.
Master of Public Health (M.P.H.)
Successful solutions to community health problems depend on understanding how complex local, regional, national, and global factors influence public health practice. Future public health leaders will generate new information from interdisciplinary studies and develop it into unique, community-based public health programs.
The M.P.H. program provides students with a strong foundation in the core disciplines of public health—epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and administration, social and behavioral sciences, and environmental health. The M.P.H. curriculum then builds upon that foundation by providing advanced training in the theoretical and practical applications of these sciences to community-based health promotion research and practice.
The M.P.H. program is practice-oriented. If you have little or no experience in community health, the M.P.H. will prepare you to work with communities to map their assets and needs. Using those assessments, you will be able to develop and evaluate culturally relevant interventions to promote public health. If you already have experience in the field, our program will build upon your understanding of public health competencies and help you develop new understandings of—and applications to—your everyday practices.

Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)
When you earn an M.B.A. from Walden University’s School of Management, you will join a network of successful business executives who have enhanced their knowledge, expanded their influence, and advanced their careers by developing their leadership and management potential.
Building on Walden’s 35-year tradition of developing advanced degree programs for working professionals, the M.B.A. program has been enhanced to give you a high-quality learning experience and allow you to better focus on your learning. As a student, you will be automatically registered for your courses and receive your required textbooks prior to the start of each quarter at no additional cost. In addition, you’ll begin the program with a team of colleagues to support and motivate you every step of the way. The program is structured so that you can complete your M.B.A. degree in less than two years.
Walden’s M.B.A. focuses on four key areas:
- Reflective business leadership and management practice
- Business processes
- Specialized practice
- Capstone
The courses feature practical case studies, business simulations and “virtual executive” roles that give you the opportunity to apply business strategies immediately in your workplace and industry. The program provides a solid grounding in leading-edge management, economics, and marketing strategies and practices, with the option to choose a specialization in areas critical to success in today’s competitive business environment.
B.S. in Business Administration
Walden’s Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Business Administration is a completion program that provides students with a solid grounding in the core knowledge and competencies required in today’s diverse, global, and technologically sophisticated business environment.
Business Administration majors gain a working knowledge of the principles and concepts of management theory and practice by examining the interrelationships among the major business disciplines. Through case studies and demonstrations, students evaluate practical applications of the manager’s role in planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling.
This major is results-oriented and extends beyond theories and conceptual understanding to practical application. Once students have a solid foundation in their selected major, they select a concentration from today’s most important fields. This flexibility ensures that students learn professionally relevant skills that can be directly applied to the working world.
Master of Business Administration/Master of Public Administration
To excel in a position, you often need knowledge and skills from multiple areas of expertise, making it difficult to choose one degree that fits your long-term career goals. Whether you work in health administration in private industry, manage business operations for a nonprofit organization, or have other goals in mind, Walden’s dual degree options allow you to expand the breadth of your learning and earn two degrees in less time than if you pursued each separately.
Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration
The Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration program prepares you to meet the challenges of governance and effective service delivery as government and nonprofit institutions become increasingly intertwined. To have robust communities, leaders must have the vision to create plans, develop policies, and manage resources across economic sectors. As a result, we need leaders in public service whose practice is grounded in scientific inquiry and scholarship, and who are prepared not only to improve our democratic institutions, but also to add to our understanding of those institutions.
Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.)
As governmental and nongovernmental institutions increasingly overlap and evolve, the demand for well-educated management professionals to excel in public service continues to grow. Walden’s Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) program prepares public/nonprofit professionals to excel in this increasingly complex, politicized, intersector environment.
Walden’s M.P.A. offers you an opportunity to directly apply the academic theories and skills to activities in your own community, making the learning experience personally meaningful and contributing to the betterment of society. Walden students benefit from the resources and guidance needed to develop well-grounded new public policies and management practices.

Programs of study focus on every aspect of the software engineering process, including design, testing, implementation, and maintenance.
M.S. in Systems Engineering
Systems engineering represents an interdisciplinary approach to the design of multiple component devices. It differs from other branches of engineering in that it deals with methods for analysis, synthesis, and design of complex multidisciplinary problems as opposed to solving specific disciplinary problems. Systems engineers in the 21st century are found in many traditional engineering fields—communications, aerospace, defense, manufacturing, and information technology—as well as nontraditional fields, such as transportation logistics, medical devices, agriculture, and even criminal justice.
The M.S. in Systems Engineering program is designed to provide engineers with the necessary processes and tools, enabling them to define and validate system requirements, develop effective designs, and ensure those designs are safe and meet customer requirements. The program was developed specifically for engineers from various disciplines so that they can become knowledgeable in this multidisciplinary approach.
