WHAT:   Hundreds of students from Southland high schools build canoe-like hulls they will take back to their schools and equip with solar panels, batteries, motors and steering for Metropolitan Water District’s Solar Cup competition in May, 2010.

VISUALS: Hundreds of high school students from Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties nailing and gluing-together marine-grade plywood to build 16-foot-long single-seat hulls for nation’s largest solar-boat competition. Teams will spend next seven months equipping the hulls for the May 2010 competition at Lake Skinner near Temecula.

BACKGROUND: Solar Cup is a seven-month program of the Metropolitan Water District and its member public water agencies in which teams of high school students build and race solar-powered boats. At kick-off event, students are given tool chests and kits of pre-cut marine-grade plywood to assemble the hulls they will subsequently equip and race in the May 14-16 Solar Cup event at Lake Skinner, Temecula.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a cooperative of 26 cities and water agencies serving 19 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps its members to develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
