Today’s educational opportunities have opened the door for many students, especially when selecting an online program. Whether you are an adult returning to school or a more traditional student, if you are choosing an online program, you will need to carefully consider the following aspects.
Recognize the Challenges
The convenience of an online degree program often leads many potential students to think taking courses involves little time or work. That is simply not the case. Any program of value will place extensive demands on students.
Because of the enormous flexibility of online programming, it is easy to fit distance learning into a work schedule. But potential students must first determine the number of hours they may devote to their studies each week then assess how that number matches up with the expectations of their respective program.
In addition, because of the flexibility, students must be able to discipline themselves. Most classes still have a specific beginning and end date but then offer great flexibility in between those dates. Though students do not need to free up a specific time every week to attend a class, they must find time to handle the course materials and assignments.
The flexibility of online programming can easily lead to procrastination and a great deal of excuse-making. Students must be able to discipline themselves to work on their course every week in order to progress. You will have flexibility week-to-week as to when to accomplish the work but make no mistake, there will be assignments and course-related tasks that demand a regular commitment.
Failing to do one’s Homework
The second biggest mistake that many students make is failing to fully research the schools that are available or the specific course of study that he or she is interested in. Many national schools have a large online presence so it is natural for students to begin thinking about those schools when they are considering an online degree.
However, there are also many quality schools that are relatively unknown, schools you may never have heard of but are worthy of consideration. The first key piece of homework is to examine a program’s documented accreditation.
Second, be certain that the school and program you choose offers the major and program focus you seek. Too many times students start a program only to learn half-way through the program that many of the advanced courses are not what they are seeking or that the program will not lead to the certificate or credential they desire.
Failing to do one’s homework always leads to great frustration as students then seek to transfer to another program and take their credits with them. Transferring can be very challenging and most often students will find that some of the courses they have paid good money for will not be accepted by the accepting school.
Eliminate the Two Most Common Mistakes
Before beginning any program, be sure you are ready to handle the workload associated with earning an online degree. In addition, before starting any coursework, be sure you have thoroughly researched the school and its programs to ensure the program that you select will provide the training and coursework you desire.
