Checking Into Newer Online Schools

By Shannon Kietzman, Contributing Writer

Updated: 11/20/2009

When compared to brick and mortar colleges, all online schools are quite young. Still, there are several schools that are young even when compared to other online schools. Just because they are newer schools, however, it doesn’t mean they aren’t a good place to get a quality education. Here’s a look at just a few of the newer schools on the block.

American InterContinental University

American InternContinental University has actually been around since 1970 – which is a bit on the young side for a brick and mortar university – but it didn’t start offering programs online until 2001. There are many different online degrees offered through American InterContinental University. These include:

  • Business Administration
  • Criminal Justice
  • Education
  • Healthcare Management
  • Information Technology
  • Marketing
  • Visual Communication

The school also focuses more on individualized learning and completing projects rather than utilizing exams; therefore, you will need to take your learning style into consideration and determine if this is the best method for you to learn or if you are more of a test taker. The school is accredited through the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It has accreditation for providing associates degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees.

Argosy University Online

Argosy University Online is another college that offers opportunities for an online education. Although the school is fairly new to the world of distance learning, it still offers programs leading to bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. Some of the programs of study offered at this university include:

  • Business Administration
  • Education
  • Psychology

This school specializes in keeping classes small and providing individualized attention to its students. It also offers an online library and 24-Hour Tech Support, which can be quite helpful if you are not comfortable with using a computer.

Everest University Online

In a sense, Everest University Online isn’t really all that new. This is because it used to go by the name of FMU Online. The new name, however, is fairly new. As a result, many people think the university is newer than it really is. Everest University online offers programs in:

  • Business
  • Criminal Justice
  • Information Systems

The school focuses on using a variety of communication methods with students, including online chats with instructors, email, and bulletin boards. The school focuses on collaboration and peer interaction as an educational tool and offers degrees at the associate, bachelor, and master level.

Grand Canyon University Online

Grand Canyon University was actually founded in 1949. In 2000, however, the school expanded and began its online degree program. Through its online component, you can earn degrees in areas such as:

  • Arts
  • Business
  • Christian Studies
  • Nursing
  • Science

Both bachelor and master’s degrees are available through Grand Canyon University online. Furthermore, as a Christian University, all of the programs of study have a Christian basis.

Online schools are becoming increasingly more common as consumer demand for these types of learning institutions grow. While some of these colleges exist solely online, many brick and mortar institutions are expanding to offer online classes as well. Therefore, it is always a good idea to explore all of your options in order to get the best learning experience possible.
